Overview

Normal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg whereas high blood pressure is 140/90mmHg or higher.

Causes

There are several factors causing high blood pressure, with the most common ones being smoking, overweight, lack of exercise, excessive salt or alcohol in diet.

Stress is a number one factor correlated with high blood pressure, as are age, genetics and chronic kidney disease.

Risks

If blood pressure is not controlled it can lead to stroke. This occurs through the weakening of the brain's blood vessels which can grow thinner and eventually leak or burst.

Blood clots within arteries can also be caused by high blood pressure. This can cause a blockage of blood flow and eventually stroke.
