Overview

Hormone replacement therapy is used to relieve symptoms of the menopause by replacing hormones that are at a lower level at the onset of menopause.

HRT also helps to prevent weakening of the bones (osteoporosis), which is more common after the menopause.

Causes

Women usually decide to have hormone replacement therapy when they know they are due to start their menopause. Balancing the hormones to an optimum level, can help patients experience an easier menopause.

HRT patients experience less mood swings and temperaments they would not class as normal.

Risks

Women who have premature menopause are at a higher risk for osteoporosis due to the premature decrease in the hormone estrogen. The lack of this hormone estrogen can also increase risk factors for ovarian and colon cancers, cataracts, and gum disease.
