Overview

Beta blockers or beta-adrenergic blocking agents, are medications to reduce your blood pressure when blood pressure has been recorded as significantly high. Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of epinephrine, a hormone also known as adrenaline. When you take beta blockers, your heart beats slower and with less force, to reduce the blood pressure.

They are also sometimes known as beta antagonists, beta-adrenergic blocking agents, or beta-adrenergic antagonists.

Causes

Beta blockers can be prescribed for a number of conditions such as high blood pressure, angina, abnormal heart rhythms, heart, anxiety, migraine, glaucoma, and even overactive thyroid symptoms.

People at risk of the following are usually in need of beta blockers:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Heart failure.
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Heart attacks
  • Migraine
  • Certain types of tremors
