Overview

Heartburn can be described as a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid travelling up towards the throat (acid reflux). A continuous reaction of acid reflux is known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease with the main symptoms of acid reflux being gastroscopy or antacids.

Causes

Hiatalhernia is one of the most common causes of acid reflux and occurs when the upper part of the stomach moves on top of the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the stomach from the chest.

The diaphragm plays a significant role in keeping acid inside the stomach.

There are also certain foods that cause acid reflux, such as alcohol, chocolate, coffee and tomatoes.

Risks

If acid reflux is left untreated it can develop into a more serious condition such as cancer of the esophagus. This is due to the precancerous changes in cells that acid reflux can cause. Symptoms should never be ignored.

Lifestyle

Excessive drinking and indulging in processed or acidic foods can result in acid reflux. Regular exercise should be considered as priority as well as a healthy balanced diet that is high in vegetables.
